4/2/12 Letter from the President
To all of our loyal followers,
We at Canine Angels are so proud to have been nominated for the Charity of the Year 2011 award. We attended the Gala Dinner on March 31st, and it was a phenomenally elegant evening in every way. We did not win the award (this year), but we wish to express our gratitude to each one of you who reads our website and follows our path though the world of dog training, therapy dogs, and service dogs for disabled veterans. I wish to thank every volunteer who has given his or her time to us, and has dedicated heart and effort to be a part of our noble cause. We are proud to have been considered, and we were in excellent company among the other nominees.
Thank you all for your support and energy.
With love,
Rick Kaplan, President
1/17 12 Tonight Canine Angels attended the meeting of American Legion Riders 186 in Little River; Last fall, ALR donated over $1000 to us, and we have dedicated a service dog to them for that most generously kind consideration. We presented a membership with a portrait by local artist Suzanne Goard of service dog "Toby", a black lab, and his owner, a six year veteran of the United States Air Force, Sgt. James H.Miller, as well as with an engraved plaque commemorating the gift to us.

The Calabash American Legion Post 503 held its annual Christmas Day dinner at the post in December. Santa Claus made a visit and wished everyone a merry Christmas. Rick Kaplan of Canine Angels accepted the special patches making the Canine Angels honorary members of the Calabash American Legion Post 503 Riders Group from Bill Lemia, president of the Legion Riders.
Also during the holiday season, the post’s Riders Legion honored the Canine Angels with a special resolution, making the Angels (dogs) honorary members in the Riders’ group. Special patches were made for the dogs’ vests.
Rick Kaplan teaches the dogs to help and assist veterans in living an active life.
11/15 Thanks to Kathy Maupin, who arranged a visit for the Angels to New Horizons Brain Injury Center in Conway, SC. A great time was had by all, and we had a total of 10 dogs as Jeanne brought Lady and Bode to the party. Everyone got to play and pet, and ask some great questions. Here is a glimpse:

10/1 The First Annual "Swim for the Roses" was held on 9/28 at the home of Mimi and Allen Ostrager in Shallotte, NC, to honor their departed Chancey Rose. All proceeds went to a great animal NC support group, Paws Ability, run by Janie Withers. We had nearly 30 dogs in the pool throughout the day, and I, Rick Kaplan, acted as doggie lifeguard. At least 10 dogs of all ages swam for the first time, to the amazement of everyone. All breeds and all sizes showed up for the pool, the hot dogs, and the charity. Here are some more of the pictures:

7/21 American Legion Riders 186...
Yesterday we were welcomed to the ALR Post 186 in Little River, SC, by Sue and Joe DePasqua, and the entire membership to present our pack (7 right now) and to describe our mission and our progress. Joining us was Corporal Kim Cunningham, daughter Kenz, and pup in training Beans, adorned with protective cone after eye surgery (a success). Kim received a lengthy standing ovation for her courage and her service to our nation. Also on hand was Janie Withers of Paws Ability, a dynamic NC fundraising group that supports local animal rescue efforts. Talk about the goodness of people - the membership agreed to make a donation of $250 to Canine Angels to assist us in our efforts for disabled veterans, when a voice from the crowd, belonging to Mary Mazza, stated that if the Legion donated $500 she would match it, and Canine Angels was therefore witness to the magic of $250 transforming into $1000 in an instant! I dedicated our next canine candidate to ALR 186, with a promise to keep the membership involved in the pup's (yet to be determined) development, progress, and placement. So many thanks to so many generous people..... Pictured is Rick Kaplan receioving check from George Wald...

Thanks to "The Pearl" golf club for letting a sevensome go out today. Someone call Guinnes, as we had at one point 6 dogs and I in one cart. Don't ask. Eventually, everyone took turns running alongside for the most part, as it took me 5 minutes each time to get out......

7/10: Note from Laura Ward, director of Doggone Healthy
Hi Rick,
I didn't get home until late and didn't get to say thank you! I think things went well, and we love your passion, and know how genuine this endeavor is for you. We are excited about moving forward and will continue to develop these programs. Ernie (Dr. Ward) enjoyed working with you! Jeanne called and was very happy with Magnum's progress. I could tell Kim was making a tremendous effort socially and wish I had been able to talk to her more. I felt quite proud of your efforts and it was certainly poignant that she was present. Laura
