Canine Angels, Inc. - FREE SERVICE DOGS FOR DISABLED VETERANS
2/27/12  Spaghetti dinner is a hit!!!!!

Some 250 people attended the first Canine Angels Spaghetti Fund Raising Dinner Saturday and helped raise more than $4000 in donations.
Dirty Dick’s Crab House Rest- aurant in North Myrtle Beach, SC, hosted the hugely successful ‘SOLD OUT’ event which was orchestrated by volunteer Kathy Maupin and her spectacular committee.  Praise for everything the night included seemed unanimous.
A $10 ticket bought you a dinner of spaghetti bolonese, caesar salad, garlic bread and layered pudding shooters for dessert.  Canine Angels netted $5 of that for each ticket sold.  Raffles and 50/50 ticket sales added to the profits.  Diane Cramp was the winner of the 50/50, and immediately announced her donation of her share, $275, back to Canine Angels.  What a generous and compassionate lady!!!  Diane:  we love you!!
Several veterans with their service dogs and families attended, and were spotlighted in remarks by Rick Kaplan, Canine Angels president and trainer.  Among them were Harold Ramsey and Kaylie, Jim Miller and Toby, Larry McMahan and Abby, and Joseph Modica and Barney.
The Canine Angels super sized pack collected monetary donations and deposited the dollar bills in large jars.  They were represented by Freddie, King, Leroy, Major, Junior, Sundance, Stella and Diva.  Tomo also visited.
Plans are underway for future fundraisers.  Thanks to all our volunteers and supporters who made this night fun and profitable.  Please look for notices of our next fund raiser.  Thanks to all who supported us!!!

11/27 Lakota & Dave are a hit!!!:
"Another great day for LaKota and me.  Ready for our run, after he finally nudged me out of bed.  My 16 year old daughter fell in love with him and if I am at work, she comes over and lets him out of his pen and takes him for a walk.  They love to play “Fetch”.  She wants him to be partly “her dog” too.  Kota has enough love to go around for everyone!
Thanks.     Dave"

11/21 Lakota finds his forever home with Dave King
Hi Rick,
Boy I almost hate for these days to end.  LaKota and I are becoming fast friends.  Yesterday, I took him to Walmart and told them that we wanted to become a Therapy team, and they let us in just to walk around.  I wanted to acclimate him to new places.  It was awesome to just walk down the aisles with this beautiful dog and overhear words like “Beautiful!”  “Look at that dog!”  “Hi Blue Eyes!”… well, you get the picture.
Today we had another work out on the beach.  Great run.  He was tired when we got back.  We also went to Pet Smart for the ear stuff but they didn’t have any.
I can’t believe that I fell in love with this dog so fast.  I think the feeling is mutual.
Dave
I decided that Sunday would be a good day for raw egg day.  He loved it.  Thought I might get a chance to sleep in but Kota was ready to roll at 7:30.  We just got back from a great run.  I measure his exercise by how far his tongue is hanging out.  We had fun!  This dog is just magnificent!  Dave

Shelter Dogs Train For Tasks
Canine Angels Inc. aims to help veterans.
Business came to a halt at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World as customers were distracted by a golden retriever pushing a shopping cart. Richard Kaplan of North Myrtle Beach, founder and president of Canine Angels Inc., stopped training King for that day out of concern for sales. He understands that most folks are going to stop shopping to watch a dog push a shopping cart.
Bass Pro in Myrtle Beach Mall is one of the businesses that allow Kaplan to solicit donations and use the spacious store for training. Kaplan's "pups" (as he refers to the six dogs with him) were spotted on Monday in the First Citizens Bank in  North Myrtle Beach. The dogs quietly rested on the floor while Kaplan was at the teller window. People express amazement
at the dogs' behavior, Kaplan says, "and I am amazed that they are so amazed.  A properly trained dog is a stress-free, happy one."
The six dogs with Kaplan now include his own Freddie and Ginger, brother and sister chocolate Labrador retrievers now 11 years old, who have the innate ability to detect seizures an hour in advance, Kaplan told members of the Rotary Club of Little River. He was in the jewelry business in Westchester County, New York, and had trained dogs there. Kaplan has had a place in SC  for 30 years; he became more a full-time resident, and after "playing golf every day" for a time Kaplan felt the need to do something more charitable than golf and founded Canine Angels Inc., now a 501(c)3 charity.
"The first goal is saving dogs - even those who don't make the program." Of the four dogs in different stages of training, three are from the North Myrtle Beach shelter. About 30 dogs, all rescued one way or the other, are with foster parents. Typically, one of five dogs rescued will qualify for becoming task service dogs. All receive training, such as learning how to walk on a leash and basic commands, so they have a leg up, so to speak, in being adopted.  Alfie, Bourbon and Layla are the others in Kaplan's "six-pack."
King is almost trained as a task dog, being able to put dishes in the sink, untie shoes and place garbage in the can.  Bourbon, a German shepherd and Rottweiler mix, was trained and placed with a veteran,  but Kaplan took Bourbon back when the man did not carry out his part of the signed agreement.  That experience brought tweaking to
the program and now Kaplan will place trained dogs only within an hour and a half drive. Five veterans are on the waiting list. The foster homes are in an area from Wilmington, N.C., to Florence to Pawleys Island. A trained task dog represents a $25,000 investment of donated money, and Kaplan maintains control of trained dogs for a year after they are placed.
Animal shelters, rescued dogs, trainers, veterans or others who receive task dogs - all win in the Canine Angels program. People love dogs and people love veterans, Kaplan says. "I have one foot in the dog lovers' camp and the other in the veterans' camp."

Canine IQ Test
: Examine the following photo to see whether you can find the appropriate clues in order to determine which dog is the Alpha:

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY.
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.  I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.  I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.  I didn't want her to know  I hadn't been walked today.  Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped she wouldn't feel sad about my past.  I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.  I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.
A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her all would be well.  Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright I instantly jumped into her arms.  I would promise to keep her safe.  I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate she came down my corridor.  So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.  So many more to be saved.  At least I could save one.
           I rescued a human today.
